It's strawberry. I made it at our RS activity on Saturday. I wanted to get a picture of me in my pearls and new apron, holding the pie but unfortunately, I didn't quite finish the apron. So I'll have to make another pie sometime after the apron is done.
The activity turned out great. My counselor who is in charge of the activities is amazing! She has a great committee, too. Everything looked so good--for the luncheon, they had centerpieces that looked like ice cream sundaes, except the ice cream part was really flowers. They also made a "juke box" out of balloons, had large "records" on the walls, and had 50's music playing. Oh...and a box of Cracker Jacks at each place, in retro wrappers. It looked incredible. We had a lot of people come...both women and YW...and everyone seemed to enjoy the pie crust and apron classes. It was really great to see many of the YW finish their entire apron during the class. (I would have finished mine too if I weren't the RS president--had a few other responsibilities!) We encouraged women to dress up and I really wish I had brought my camera. I meant to, but I forgot. We had awards for costumes and one of my counselors won one of them...she had this great 50's polka dot dress, pearls, white gloves, and a little hand bag! We also had a jello salad competition and my jello salad came in 2nd place. (I tried a new recipe I've never tried before with a pretzel crust, a layer of cream cheese & cool whip, and strawberry jello with real strawberries mixed in. It was yummy!) Overall, it was a very successful event and I was pleased with how it went...but tired when it was over. We fed the missionaries that night--the new set of Elders--and they enjoyed the pie.
While I was gone all morning (and half the afternoon) Frank and Jared swept and mopped the kitchen and all the bathroom floors--I really appreciated that! Tanner was gone all day--he was doing tech for a dance festival thing that was going on at the high school. He will get paid for it, so that will be nice.
Sunday was not quite as hectic as some have been lately. I did have PEC before church and we picked up Wanda too. I had choir after church, but other than that I didn't have any other meetings so I actually had time to help Seth put together a little puzzle that he got for his birthday:
Jared helped too. We also tried out his new Crayola Glow Book, and it turned out to be as cool as I thought it would be--but it doesn't photograph well. It makes these glowing pictures that move. I want to try doing a picture of fireworks exploding sometime, but haven't had a chance yet.
Monday morning I had to get blood drawn--I have a physical scheduled for next week. After that I checked on a sister who's husband had surgery that morning. By the time I talked to her, he was out of surgery and in recovery. He is home now and doing well. I'm glad I checked on her, though--she had left her cane at home and really needed it, so I was able to go pick it up for her.
After leaving the hospital, I went with three other women in my ward (well, one is in another ward now--actually, she's the RS president that I replaced) to go up to the church camp to help do some cleaning to prepare it for all the groups coming in this summer. (Our stake and several other local stakes purchased a former Girl Scout camp up in Pennsylvania last year to use for Girls' Camp, Youth Conferences, Scout camp outs, etc. We renamed the camp "Camp Liahona".) It was raining most of the day so we got pretty wet. All four of us had been up to the camp before but between the four of us we still managed to get lost on the way there so it took us longer to get there than we planned. We were still able to sweep out a large pavilion, a latrine, and several platform tents before we had to head back home. It was an enjoyable drive there and back, and fun to work with other women to talk to. I was tired when I got home though, and had a bad headache that evening so Frank was a dear and made dinner. I actually had a scratchy / sore throat from last Friday evening until about Tuesday, and I've had several headaches this week too. But nothing too bad, and nothing that slowed me down much, thankfully.
The big news for Monday is that Frank got a job offer from Marriott! He was actually told last Thursday that he was going to be offered a job, but he was still surprised when they called him to offer him the job because it wasn't the job he expected. This job is a promotion--he'll be paid a little better and he will also be eligible to receive bonuses. So we are feeling very grateful and blessed. Frank was a bit in shock for a day or two. Today he signed his acceptance papers. He will switch over to this new position July 6th. We are very happy that he is going to stay with Marriott--we weren't too excited about the switch to Xerox, although thankful that he had a job at all.
Tuesday morning I helped a sister in the ward "stage" her house. (I was only doing what other people told me to do--I have no talent at that kind of thing.) Remember the sister who was moving a few weeks ago? Well, unfortunately the sale of her house fell through because the buyer couldn't get financing so now she needs to get her house back on the market. Since houses that are staged sell better than completely empty houses, the Elders helped her move some of her furniture back over and I went to help make beds, put books on shelves, and things like that. Hopefully she will find another buyer soon.
Tuesday afternoon I had book chat. I finished the book on Sunday evening. It was a very interesting book, although a little dark and not very happy. I still enjoyed it a lot and so did everyone in my group--we had an interesting discussion about it. Tuesday evening Frank went to help teach a new member discussion to a family in our ward--the mom was baptized in January and the dad and oldest daughter a few months later. They are doing great. The dad is into computers so he and Frank have become friendly. Frank didn't get home until nearly 10:00--he sheepishly admitted that he and the dad had stood outside talking about computers for a long time after the discussion.
On Wednesday I had my eyes checked. They gave me new contact lenses, and I am thrilled that I can actually see close up again, as well as far away. I was really starting to feel "blind" when I had my contact lenses in. I always had to choose between being able to see close up or being able to see far away. Now I can work on my computer, read my scriptures, read my planner and my grocery lists, read food labels and recipe books, and even read the tiny numbers on the produce stickers at the grocery store! It's been really nice. I ordered new glasses too although I decided not to get bifocals for those. It would have cost a lot more for those kind of lenses and I don't wear glasses enough to make it worth it. If I need to read something when I am wearing them, I can just take them off. They still cost me a pretty penny but I got some I really like and they should last a long time. I also got the transitions lenses so when I need to put them on to take a kid somewhere I won't be blinded by the sun anymore.
Wednesday afternoon we had the Elders come over to help us move out our old couches. They didn't have any couches in their new apartment so we let them have ours. The new furniture wasn't scheduled to be delivered until today, but we had severe weather forecast for Thursday so we decided it would be better to move them when it wasn't raining and we could live without couches for a few days. The living room looks very large and bare without them:
Unfortunately, it's going to look that way for heaven knows how much longer because when the furniture arrived this afternoon, all three pieces (both couches and the entertainment center) were damaged. One couch had a big gouge on one of the supporting wood pieces, the other couch had a scratch on the leather, and the entertainment center had pieces that didn't fit together right and two gouges on one side. We told them we paid way too much money to have them damaged at all and sent them all back. I have no idea how long it is going to take to get replacements, but I suspect it is going to be more than a day or two. Very frustrating!
Meanwhile, yesterday we spent some time doing some cleaning in the basement. We decided that we want to put the old entertainment center (which is really an armoire) downstairs by the back door for storage. But since that area is currently filled with a lot of junk, we had some cleaning to do. Jared and Frank took a big load of things to Goodwill and we threw out a bunch of stuff too. We still have a lot of work to do down there before we are ready to move the armoire down, but it is looking better. I took some "before" pictures, but I don't want to post them without some nice "after" pictures, so that will have to wait. I'm really excited to get things cleaned out down there! It's been really messy for about 6 years now. I have been wanting to clean it that whole time.
Maybe you heard on the news that our part of the country got hit by some pretty strong storms yesterday. We were fortunate and didn't get much where we are, though. One storm came through in the morning. It got so dark that it felt like it was almost night, which was weird. We did get a lot of thunder and lightning, some wind and some heavy rain, but it was only for a short time and then it turned into light rain for a while. Things cleared up mid-day and then later in the afternoon it got all cloudy again. We got a little more rain and wind, but not much to speak of--on the radar I could see that the worst part of the storm went south of us--they had tornado warnings in Montgomery County, which is the county just south of us. I think we just caught the edge of that storm. We did have a lot of rain off and on this week. This morning it was windy and just a tad chilly. It has really felt more like spring than summer most of this week (although Wednesday was sunny and quite hot). Now it is sunny and a lot warmer--feels more like the last day of school should feel!
Yesterday was the last day of school for Tanner and Jared--the high school students don't have to go to school the last day unless they have a test to make up. Today was the last day of school for Seth. His class went to the park for a party. They got out two hours early, so he was home by just after lunch time. Tanner and Jared have spent most of the day at the church--all the Seminary kids wanted to have a party. Tanner is at his last Driver's Ed class now. He will probably go back over to the church when he is done with that. Neither he nor Jared is going to be very happy when they find out there are no couches to sit on!
This week has been a bit calmer and I've had a little time to relax (not a lot, but a little). (Makes me wonder what might be coming next week, though.) I didn't even have a presidency meeting this week, although I meant to. We were supposed to have one yesterday but I messed up and told one of my counselors that it was on Wednesday. We had decided to have it at her house and she even had lunch ready for us! Then we didn't show up. I felt really bad about that. She couldn't meet yesterday so we will have to wait until Monday. I will have a new secretary by then, so that will be nice.
Well, on to summer vacation now. I hope I can convince the boys to get a few productive things done in addition to the relaxing that I know they are hoping to do. I'm looking forward to having a less structured schedule for a few months although I'm sure I'll still have lots of work to do.
