Weekly Review January 30 '26

Well, this was an interesting week. We were busy on Saturday making sure we were prepared for the upcoming snow storm and getting a few things done while we were able to get out. Our shower head in our bathroom hasn't been working well so we decided to replace it. The faucet in our bathroom has also been dripping. Frank and I went to Lowe's and purchased a new shower head and some washers for the faucet. We also went to Crumbl cookies because Seth wanted to do that for FHE treat. We weren't sure what the roads would be like on Monday, so we decided to get the treat on Saturday. After we got home, Frank installed the new shower head and replaced the washers in our faucet (no more dripping faucet!) That evening I helped one of my former Seminary students file his income taxes (via the phone--he's the one who is in the army and he is currently stationed in Arizona). He sent out a text message to a group of the women in our ward (he calls us "mothers" 😊) a few days earlier that said "I wonder if anyone knows how to file taxes", which made me laugh. (Yes, I know a little bit about it! 😂) It turns out that he needed more moral support than actual help. Once I got him connected with a good online tax filing site, he was able to download his W-2s and the online software did most of the work for him. He actually didn't have a third W-2 yet, so he couldn't finish filing but I think he feels more confident that he knows what he's doing now. Seth worked most of the day on Saturday but he was home while I was helping with the taxes so I had him sit down and do his too so I could help him at the same time. 

Later in the day on Saturday we got the word that church was cancelled for Sunday. I woke up about 5:20 am on Sunday and about 4 inches of snow had already fallen. 

It continued to snow until late morning when it changed to sleet and continued to sleet until evening. We got about 8 inches of snow with sleet on top of that. The sleet packed down the snow so later in the day it actually looked like we had less snow than it did earlier in the day. Frank and Seth did quite a bit of shoveling, off and on, all day. I stayed inside--read scriptures, worked on Seminary lessons, listened to podcasts, and relaxed.

The rest of the week nearly everything has been cancelled because besides having 8 inches of snow with ice on top of that, the temperatures have been extremely cold. Our daytime highs have never been about the mid 20's, and the night time lows have all been in the single digits with wind chills below zero. That means that none of the snow or ice has melted, and moving large amounts of heavily ice crusted snow off of the roads has been a difficult and slow process. We've had cold weather advisories nearly every evening beginning at 7:00 pm and lasting until 11:00 am the following morning.

School was cancelled every day except for today and today there was a 2 hour delayed opening, which means that Seminary was cancelled every day this week. I enjoyed the extra sleep for sure! But I have missed the kids and it's been hard to know what to plan. The school system did make a decision every afternoon about school the next day, so we never had to get up really early to find out if there was going to be school that day, which I appreciated. But I still felt like I was "on hold" most of the week, wondering if I was going to need to get up and teach a lesson the next day or not. And it was hard to feel motivated to work on Seminary lessons when I wasn't sure if / when I would teach them. One of the lessons that I prepared last week I will not teach at all. I have worked on two others a bit, and I will be teaching those next week, along with a third lesson that I haven't prepared yet (although I've read it & have been thinking about it). 

I stayed busy at home all week doing the regular household chores (cooking, meal planning, laundry, cleaning...), listening to podcasts, reading a lot of Mona's Eyes, and doing a little bit of coloring. I also watched a movie one night (The Life List; it was pretty good) and exercised every day. While exercising, I've been watching a BBC miniseries version of Little Women, which is very good. I actually finished it this morning. 

Frank didn't have work the entire week because the UMD campus was closed all week. It was closed the earlier part of the week while snow / ice removal happened and then later in the week the campus steam heat system went down so there was no heat. He basically got an unexpected week of paid vacation, which we can't complain about! (Although I think he got a bit bored, and by mid-week he was experiencing some cabin fever. 😂) 

The FCC campus was closed Monday through Wednesday, so Seth didn't start his classes for this semester until Thursday. He only has one class on Tuesdays / Thursdays, though, so he's only been to one class so far. It's an art class. He has a math class and a history class on Mondays and Wednesdays and he also has a game design class, which is online. He did check his online class and had some reading to do, so he did that. He was not scheduled to work this week except for tomorrow. Both his YSA FHE and his Institute class were cancelled because of the weather. 

We did venture out to do a few things as the week has gone on. Frank drove all the way to Waldorf on Tuesday to do some work for a client. Thankfully, the main roads were clear enough to be safe by then. I planned to go to the "Sisters Meet Up" at the church on Tuesday, but when I went outside I discovered that there was good foot of snow / ice behind my car, in spite of the shoveling Frank and Seth had been doing. I decided that by the time Seth got it shoveled, it would be too late to go. On Wednesday I had a dentist appointment (just my bi-annual check up). I decided to do grocery shopping that afternoon instead of waiting until Thursday morning when it would be a lot colder. Frank came with me. We went to the church first so I could make some copies (for the lesson that I didn't end up teaching) and Tammy and her youngest son were at the church too (I think she brought him over to play basketball for a while) so we all set up the tables for Seminary. The school system was later sending out the notice about cancelling school, so we thought there might be school the next day. By the time we got home from the store, we found out that school was cancelled again. They did send a bit of an explanation because by then a lot of the roads were fairly clear:

Last night, Frank and Seth went to see Avatar (Frank's second time seeing it; Seth's first). 

This was supposed to be the first week for VITA as well, but it was cancelled on Monday and Wednesday and the day that I volunteer is Wednesday. 

Today Frank and I went to the temple. I already had an appointment to do initiatories and since Frank was off work, I asked if he wanted to come too. He was glad to go since the temple was closed on Tuesday and he wasn't able to work his usual temple shift. 

When we came out of the temple, I had a text from Seth telling me that his abscess has come back. When we got home, we called the surgeon and couldn't get an appointment until March, which is not very helpful! But the scheduler said she would pass on a message to the surgeon and that they would reach out if he needed to be seen sooner. In the meantime, I suggested to him that he should soak the abscess for a while and when he did that it did drain a little bit and he said it felt smaller. They called him back within an hour and scheduled an appointment for next Tuesday instead, which is much better. He is going to keep soaking the abscess a few times a day until then and hopefully it won't become a big problem before Tuesday. I really don't want another ER visit!

This week has felt very long to all of us...we all kept thinking it was later in the week than it actually was. ("It's only Tuesday? It feels like it should be Thursday...") I'm happy that we have almost made it through January. Also, next week, it is going to get all the way up to 38 degrees one day--that's going to feel like spring thaw! 😄 Stay warm and I will send another update next week. 

Weekly Review January 23 '25

Here's what we did this week:

Saturday January 17th: Finally, I got a good night's sleep! I slept 8 solid hours Friday night. It was heavenly, and so needed after a long week of bad nights. I had a haircut appointment that morning at 8:00. It started snowing as I was leaving home, and the the snow came down pretty steadily while I was getting my haircut so by the time I was done there was about a 1/2 inch on the ground and the roads were a little slick driving home.

The snow didn't last long, though. By the time I left later to go to lunch with my friend Rebekah, the snow on the roads had already melted. Rebekah and I went to a place called Qdobe which is pretty similar to Chipotle. As always, I enjoyed visiting with Rebekah. 

I spent the afternoon finishing lesson prep for Wednesday's Seminary lesson. We had the Elders over for dinner that night. Seth worked most of the day, but he got home in time for dinner. One of the Elders serving in our ward is new--he's only been out about a month--and he's from Mesa, Arizona. We were talking about the morning's snow, and he said that he was pretty excited to see some snow coming down! Frank told him that sometimes we get really big snow storms here--like a couple of feet of snow--and his eyes got as big as saucers! I told him not to get his hopes up because it doesn't happen here very often but within a few days we started hearing predictions of a big snow storm this weekend and currently they are predicting anywhere from 12 to 20 inches of snow for our area, so maybe he's going to see one of our big snow storms after all!

On Saturday evening I finished reading Flowers for Algernon. It was an interesting book. 

Sunday January 18th: I had another good night's sleep. When we got up, we discovered that it had snowed a little more in the night--but just a dusting. It was very cold that day. We have a young adult in our ward who was baptized last fall and his mom came to church on Sunday and sat right behind us. At the end of Sacrament Meeting she said "This may sound weird, but I feel like this is where I need to be." It was really cool to hear her say that! 

Seth has been called to be a Sunday School teacher in his ward and he taught his first lesson on Sunday. He forgot he was supposed to be teaching until he got to church that day, though! In spite of that, he didn't panic and he said he felt like the lesson went pretty well. A member of the stake Sunday School presidency visited that day too and Seth said he complemented him afterwarda and also gave him some pointers. Hopefully next time he teaches, he will remember to prepare! 

Frank had a ministering visit right after church. I talked with Jared, read scriptures, and listened to a podcast. After everyone got back home, we had family night lesson. That evening I started reading the book Mona's Eyes. It's about a little girl who has a brief unexplainable episode of going blind. Her family is worried that her blindness will come back, and her grandfather decides to take her to see a famous work of art each week so that she will have beautiful things to remember if she loses her sight permanently. (They live in Paris, so they go to the Louvre.) It's pretty interesting. 

Monday January 19th: It was MLK Day, so Frank had the day off work and I didn't have Seminary. I slept well again, which was awsome! Frank wasn't feeling too well that day and for the next couple of days--he was having some stomach issues. It was probably caused by one of the medications he's taking--that happens sometimes. He is feeling better now, thankfully. Frank and Seth went to Costco because Frank needed to replenish his supply of protein shakes. I got the regular chores done, read more of Mona's Eyes, and also planned one of next week's Seminary lessons. We had family night activity--played a game of bowling on the Wii and had donuts--before Seth went to his YSA FHE activity. That evening I started reading a book I got for Christmas called Sleep Smarter; I'm hoping I will get some good strategies for more consistent better sleep. I'm just reading a little bit here and there when I have the chance, since I'm reading Mona's Eyes too.

Tuesday January 20th: Frank went back to work and he also did his temple shift that evening. It was another day off school (end of the semester) so I didn't have Seminary again. I got all the regular chores done, talked to Scott, listened to a podcast, did a little bit of coloring, read a little bit, and planned another Seminary lesson for next week. That evening I had an orientation meeting for VITA, which was online. The site coordinator we've had for the last 3 years is gone now (I'm not sure if he quit or what) but the new site coordinator worked with us last year and he is great. He and his assistant have worked out a lot of new procedures which I think are going to be wonderful and help everything run more smoothly with less chaos and make life a lot easier for all the volunteers, so I'm excited about that. We also have a lot of new volunteers this year (close to 50 volunteers total now, which is fantastic...most of the years I've been volunteering there have been maybe 15 of us). We have several volunteers who are students at a local college who are studying accounting or finance. This year there are also at least 2 volunteers who are in high school, but who are hoping to go into accounting. I think that's pretty cool!

Wednesday, January 21st: I taught a lesson about the Fall for Seminary that morning; it went okay. (We are so fortunate to have the Pearl of Great Price and the Book of Mormon to help us understand so much more about the Fall!) After Seminary, Tammy and I did some planning--by then we had heard about the big snowstorm predicted for this weekend, so we decided we'd better have a plan B for next week since there may be some snow days. We're supposed to have a regular 5 day school week, and the original plan was that I would teach Monday through Wednesday and Tammy would teach Thursday and Friday. Since I had already planned two of my lessons, we juggled some things around for plan B so that I will still teach those 2 lessons even if we don't have 5 days (I will teach one of them the following week). We'll see how it all turns out. I suppose I shouldn't have started preparing lessons so early, but since I was teaching 3 in one week, I felt like I needed to start preparing. (And I haven't had time to do any more preparation since Tuesday, so it's a good thing I did some preparation while I had the chance.) 

Seth and I got his FAFSA for the 2026-27 school year completed that day. I got chores done and after Frank got off work we went to Costco because he wanted me to look at some couches they had there (he and Seth saw them when they went to Costco on Monday). He took a picture of one of them and my gut reaction was that it was too big for our living room, but I thought it would be good to actually see it. There were also a few others that Frank didn't take photos of. We measured the living room before we went over so we could compare those measurements with the measurements of the couches. It turns out I was right--the couch I had seen was too big and all the other ones were too.

Besides those things, I also talked to Scott for a while and my friend Rebekah came over to get some white bias tape from me that she needed for a project. She works during the day, but on Wednesday she had lost her voice (didn't feel sick so it must have been laryngitis) so she had to come home from work because she couldn't communicate with anyone (she's a receptionist at a doctor's office). She decided to take advantage of the unexpected day off to get some sewing done. 

On Wednesday evening Seth and I went to a swim meet at one of the high schools to see a couple of the kids in my Seminary class compete. Seth is good friends with one of them, so he wanted to go too. I've never been to a swim meet before and it was interesting. Tammy and her kids were there as well and the mom of 2 of the kids who were swimming was there too. We had fun cheering them on!

Seth left early to go to Institute and we both got home around the same time. I was up a little late, but thankfully slept well in the time that I had available for sleep. 

Thursday January 22nd: After Seminary I had a long shopping trip because I decided to get all the groceries that I had planned to get on Monday as well as Thursday's list. Now I don't have to worry about getting to the store Monday morning if it snows a bunch. And even if the roads are clear, it's supposed to be super cold, so I will be happy to avoid going out in that. Besides all the other regular chores, I also talked to both Tanner and Jared and made a batch of cookies because I promised to bring a treat for any of the youth who read Moses 4 and 5 by Friday. (We're trying to encourage them to read the required reading chapters during the week that we are actually learning about them in Seminary, instead of waiting until the end of the semester to binge read them.) 

Seth drove over to FCC to find out where all his classes for this semester are going to be. The semester starts on Monday. When I told him he might not have school on Monday because of the predicted snow storm, he said he was disappointed about that because he's ready to be on a regular schedule again. I'm glad that he feels that way! He got a notice today that the FCC campus will be closed on Sunday and Monday, though, so he will not have school until at least Tuesday. Frank also got a notice today that UMD and his office will be closed on Monday. 

Friday January 23rd: This morning after Seminary I went to the temple to do an endowment session. I always use the "Ordinances Ready" feature to get a name to take and this time I was surprised to get someone who is more closely related than "9th cousin 5 times removed" or something like that! She still isn't super closely related, but she is only my 3rd cousin 3 times removed (or something like that). I could see that she is related to me through Dad's Mom's family. Anyway, I had a cool experience on my way to the temple which is kind of hard to explain, but I will try. When I got into the car to leave, I thought about this relative (her name is Anna)--I thought that in a way I was taking her with me to the temple. And then suddenly I remembered what it felt like for me to go to the temple for the first time--the excitement and the joy--and I just felt like Anna was excited to have her work done and I also felt like she was aware of me and of the sacrifice I was making to go to the temple (I mean, I love to go--but it is a sacrifice because I'm always so tired). It was a really beautiful feeling and I felt really emotional most of the way to the temple. I'm so glad I was able to go.

Shortly after I got home, a guy from our pest control service came by to dispose of a mouse I found in one of our traps yesterday. He also showed Frank the place where he thinks the mice are probably getting in (the occasional mouse that gets in...thankfully, it doesn't happen often) and told him what we can do to block it. I spent the afternoon getting the finances updated. Frank got dinner in the oven while I finished that up, and then we watched a couple of episodes of Once Upon a Time while dinner baked and while we ate it. 

It will be interesting to see how this storm shapes up this weekend. Kind of crazy how much of the nation it is impacting...from Texas all the way across parts of the south and up into some of the midwest, all over the mid-Atlantic, and up into the north east. For us, the snow is supposed to arrive around midnight tomorrow night. The forecast says 3-5 inches of snow overnight on Saturday, 8-12 more inches of snow / ice on Sunday, and about 1 inch of snow / ice on Sunday night. Besides, that, it is going to be very cold. Actually, it's already very cold. It's currently 21 degrees, but with the wind chill (I can hear the wind blowing right now as I type) it feels like 7 degrees. The temperature is dropping to 7 degrees overnight with wind chills below zero. For the entire coming week our highs will be in the 20s with lows in the single digits. How fun!

Weekly Review January 16 '26

I'm going to do categories this week. 

Sleep update: Unfortunately, my sleep woes continued this week. I woke up at 1:00 am on both Monday and Tuesday and at 1:30 am on Wednesday. On Thursday I didn't wake up until 2:45, which felt a lot better even though that's still ridiculously early, when I think about it! This morning I didn't wake up until the alarm went off but I did have a restless night--woke up 3 times, but at least I went back to sleep quickly all three times. I've been trying a few different strategies to see if they will help me sleep better, but nothing has worked yet. Unfortunately, I'm probably just going to have to wait it out until my body shifts into a better sleep cycle. I made a deliberate effort to try to have a better attitude about it--not get grumpy and wallow in feeling sorry for myself. That seemed to help my mood, at least. I took naps on Monday and Wednesday in the mornings (and both times got woken up by phone calls from Scott) and I also took a nap Thursday late in the afternoon because I just couldn't keep my eyes open anymore. I definitely have dark circles under my eyes. 

Seminary: I spent most of Saturday working on Monday's lesson; I did finish it. I also read through Tuesday's lesson again so I could start thinking about what to do with that one. As part of my preparation for Monday's lesson--which was on the creation--I sent a message to all the youth asking them to send me a nature photo that is meaningful to them. Much to my surprise, a girl who is on our roll who came one time the first week of Seminary and hasn't come since sent me a photo! I didn't even know she was getting our messages. Another girl in the class who comes sporadically also sent me a photo. Neither one of these girls actually came to the class that day, but I was happy that they each had engaged in that lesson on some level! A few other kids sent me photos and it was nice hearing what they had to say about their photos. I always enjoy lessons where the kids talk more and I talk less. After Seminary, there was a beautiful sunrise; so appropriate after talking about the creation!

I got Tuesday's lesson prepared on Sunday. It was a life prep lesson about setting goals. At the beginning of class, I told them I was giving them the goal to build the tallest Lego creation in the class. I gave them Lego pieces whenever they answered a question. They didn't participate as much as I had hoped they would, but it did help some and they seemed to enjoy it. A couple of the boys got really competitive near the end of class and started volunteering a lot of answers and they were really insightful beautiful answers, too! One thing I liked about doing these two lessons together is that they actually tied into each other in some ways. One of the questions in the goal setting lesson was "What can we learn from the account of the Creation about accomplishing goals?" (It took time, everything was accomplished according to a plan, much effort was involved, etc.) This lesson also tied in with one of the DM scriptures we just learned--Moses 1:39. That scripture essentially teaches us that Heavenly Father has a goal and His goal is to bring to pass our immortality and eternal life. I'd never thought of that scripture that way before, but I like it. 

Next week we only have 3 days of Seminary and I only teach once. I read through my lesson on Monday or Tuesday and last night finally got it planned. I still have some things to get ready. I want to start working on my lessons for the following week as soon as possible because I am teaching 3 lessons that week. 

Tammy and I did some planning on the phone on Tuesday and some more after class on Wednesday. Because we get a new class president half way through the year, we were making a decision about that (among other things). I talked to the new president today and he accepted. We know he will do a great job! 

This morning we had them play a game to review the four DM scriptures that we have learned so far. I think most of the kids had a lot of fun with that. One boy who has come very rarely this year showed up this morning. He has made it very clear in the past that he doesn't want to be at Seminary and only comes because his mom is forcing him to come. He is a senior and finished up all his classes needed for graduation this semester (he'll be doing some sort of program to learn welding for the rest of the year) so he feels like he is done with Seminary now. He actually came today so he could tell us thank you. We weren't expecting that, but it's nice that he recognizes that we put a lot of effort into Seminary, even though he doesn't want to be there. 

Social Activities: On Saturday another couple in our ward contacted us to see if we would like to go to dinner together. Yes, we did! It was a lot of fun visiting with them and I really enjoyed the break after spending most of the day working on Seminary.

We had family night lesson on Sunday and the activity on Monday. We played the game Bank and I won both times--being cautious worked to my advantage that time. Sometimes it's a lot better to take risks, but not this time. 

I went to the Tuesday afternoon Sister's Meet Up and enjoyed visiting with the other women who came. I finished the picture that I've been coloring:

On Tuesday evening we also had a RS activity. The theme was "Tidy Up & Trade". We had a clothing swap (bring things you're not wearing anymore & take home anything you can use that others brought).and we also had a panel discussion about the emotional aspects of de-cluttering, including tips on how to de-clutter. I had actually been asked to be on the panel for that discusstion and I enjoyed it even though I was super tired. I took a large bag of clothing to donate (some mine, some Seth's). It turns out that most people who came were more interested in donating than in taking anything home with them, so we ended up donating a whole bunch of clothing to another local church. I did bring home one cardigan sweater, but that's it. 

Interesting side note: When I arrived at the church for the activity, I was surprised to see a police car with flashing lights parked near the trash corral. Our EQ president, who is also a police officer, was there talking to the other police officer so I wasn't too worried about it. I found out later that there was actually a fire in the dumpster (which had been put out before I got there and the fire truck had already left). Someone had dumped a mattress in there a few weeks ago and apparently someone else decided to set it on fire. Kind of crazy! 

Frank's Birthday: He turned 56 on Wednesday. I totally forgot to get him a card and his present hasn't arrived yet (he's getting a small treadmill that will fit under his desk) but I did make him a cheesecake and we took him out to dinner. He chose to go to the Olive Garden. We actually haven't eaten the cheesecake yet because we were too full to eat it after dinner on Wednesday. Tanner sent him a pair of BYU socks, so he did get one gift.

New Year's Cards: They arrived on Monday and I addressed most of them that day. I finished addressing them on Wednesday and we bought stamps and got them all into the mail. I whittled down our list a lot this year and only sent them to parents, siblings, uncles & aunts, and a few close friends. 

Frank and Seth: Seth doesn't start classes again until the 26th, so he has been enjoying a lot of down time. He did go to Mission Prep on Sunday, FHE (YSA) on Monday, and Institute on Wednesday. He has helped me with a few chores around the house like vacuuming and emptying the dishwasher. He only got one shift at work this week (tomorrow; he did work last Saturday as well). Frank has been doing quite a bit of cooking for me. (He's cooking dinner right now, actually.) He went to his temple shift on Tuesday. Yesterday he had a meeting and then a holiday party at work, so he got home later than usual. He also did maintenance for his clients last night. 

Weather: It rained most of the day on Saturday. It was very windy one day (I can't remember which day now). We've had a few sunny days (which I appreciate), but mostly it's been cloudy and gray--typical January weather. The temperatures haven't been too bad but the last couple of days have been quite a bit colder. On Wednesday when Tammy and I left the church after Seminary, there was a rainbow (doesn't show up very well in the photos...looks almost colorless):

Temple: I did go to the temple today and it felt really great to be in the temple again. I had an appointment to do initiatories which turned out to be a good thing for two reasons. First, there was an accident on 1-270 South and the traffic was terrible. It took me an hour to get from our house to a point that is usually only about 20 minutes away. If I had been trying to make it to the 10:00 endowment session, I definitely would not have made it in time. In the end, I was only about 10 minutes late so that wasn't a problem with initiatories. I ended up being the only patron in the booth with 3 temple workers, so the work got done very quickly. The other reason it was a good thing is that I was very tired. While driving down, I felt sleepy. Trying to stay awake through an endowment session would have been an ordeal. I'm glad it all worked out and I was able to enjoy my time at the temple,

The Big Boys: I didn't get to talk to Jared this week, but Scott called several times and Tanner called once also. Scott started his new job this week and it is going well so far. He had to take another insurance certification test and he did that today and passed it. He goes to the office (15 minutes away) three days a week and works from home the other two days. He sounds like he is in good spirits. He is very happy to be working again.

Tanner is applying for jobs, hoping to find something closer to home. There are some jobs available at Scott's place of employment, so he applied for one of those today. He is also applying at a company that a friend works for. He isn't in school right now but will take some classes when 2nd block starts, I think.

In Between Everything Else: In spite of being really tired all week, I did manage to get all the regular household tasks done. I've listened to a lot of podcasts while doing household tasks and sometimes while coloring (I started a new picture). I've also done some reading. I'm a little over halfway through Flowers for Algernon and it is really good. I don't think it's going to end happy, but it is definitely interesting and intriguing and even a little funny at times. One of the other books I put on hold back in December became available this week. I'm going to read that one next because it is in high demand so I know I won't be able to renew it and will have to return it in 3 weeks. I talked to Mom on Monday and I will be going to Utah in mid March to help complete her tax return. I'm looking forward to that!
