Holy Cow, it's hot! We've had temperatures in the 100's the last few days and high humidity too. Can't complain much, though--we've had a really beautiful summer so far. There's supposed to be a cold front coming in this afternoon too so the next week will be much more pleasant.
Since I last wrote, let's see...what have we been doing? Well, Saturday was busy--I went to the temple which took a good share of the day since I didn't get out the door until late morning. Frank isn't up to sitting that long, so he stayed home and took all the boys to get haircuts (himself included) while I was gone. He also had the boys sweep & mop the kitchen floor. I enjoyed my trip. With all the appendix craziness last month we didn't make it to the temple at all and I've missed it.
After I got home, Frank and I took the Expedition in to get new tires. (Big ouch on the wallet, but we've been needing to replace them since January!) We went to Dairy Queen for a treat while we waited and did some other necessary shopping too; I guess that was our "date" for the week!
For Father's Day I actually succeeded in surprising Frank for once! He has often mentioned that he would like to have a "flip" Belgian waffle maker like the ones we've seen at hotel breakfast bars so when I saw one at the store I decided to get it for him. Then I got all the boys up early and we made waffles for him for breakfast with the new waffle iron. We cut up strawberries and had real whipped cream too for putting on top. Here is Frank with his breakfast in bed:
It was funny because he didn't notice right away that the waffle was a different shape. Then I noticed he got a puzzled look on his face when he looked down at the waffle! That's when we explained that we had just used his new present. He got a little tool set and a candy bar too, but those weren't surpises since he picked them out himself.
Scott looks tired--he worked several hours on Saturday and didn't want to get up yet! At church the YW had candy bars for all the dads too. One of the guys who gave a talk is the husband of a member of our ward (he hasn't been baptized himself) and he did a great job. I made dinner and tried to do everything so that Frank could have a relaxing day.
The rest of the week we've been doing the usual things and trying to hibernate inside to avoid the heat as much as possible. Monday wasn't very hot yet; it actually rained. Scott & Tanner went to a picnic / going away party for Valeria, the Italian foreign exchange student that Scott went to prom with. (She's returning to Italy.) A lot of their theater friends were there so they enjoyed that a lot. Scott spent the morning at a service project with a guy in our ward who is the head of the United Way for this area.
Tuesday I had book club and went visiting teaching. Scott & Tanner went to help with a move--it was the family of a boy who is investigating the church. Scott also had to figure out what classes to sign up for this fall. It was a bit of a chore because we don't know our way around the website very well but he finally figured it all out.
Wednesday Jared had his annual check up at the doctor. He is 5' 3 1/2" now--he's grown 3 inches since February! We got his forms filled out for scout camp; I had lots of forms to fill out for Scott & Tanner this week too--for Camp Helaman. I got most of that done on Monday. Scott got up early on Wednesday to register for his fall semester classes. That went pretty well although he didn't get some of the classes at the times he wanted. He signed up for two theater classes, a math class, an english class, and a Book of Mormon class. Jared went to his friend Ian's house for the afternoon; they played games and went swimming. That evening we had YM / YW combined; it got a little crazy because we got over there and discovered the carpets had been cleaned and we couldn't use the building. This was one of the 100 degrees + days so doing activities outside was not a great option. We ended up going to one of the bishopric counselor's houses which wasn't ideal but oh well. I felt bad for the other YW counselor who had planned the whole thing and wasn't able to do things the way she'd planned so it didn't turn out as well as it could have.
Tanner spent the night with his friend Ryan on Wednesday night. Scott worked that afternoon / evening and then went to institute. It's been so hot that I decided it was time to introduce Seth to the kiddie pool. He's never been in it because the pipe to our back water spigot has been broken all these years. We finally had it fixed this spring though when we had all the other work done on the house. The pool was (understandably) filthy so I spent quite a bit of time out in the sweltering heat cleaning it out but I finally got it clean enough to fill up and Seth spent quite a few hours playing in it. Tanner and Jared both joined him also, although Tanner didn't stay in long. I didn't make it into the house to get the camera before Tanner decided to get out unfortunately because the three of them looked pretty cute sitting in the pool together--two really big boys and one little one! But I did get a few pictures of Seth. I took a lot more than this, but most of them were no good because he didn't hold still long enough for me to get good pictures. I have a lot of pictures of the top of his head or an arm or just the backyard with no kid in the picture at all! Here are some of the better pictures:
Jared did not want any proof that he actually got in the kiddie pool at his age, so he refused to get into any of the pictures. But I am evil so after I went back inside with the camera, I snuck out on the deck and took this picture of him from above:
Mwahahahaha! Now I have proof!
I went back inside because I had to make dinner--we were taking dinner to a family in our ward who have a new baby. Frank & Tanner went home teaching after dinner.
Today I got everyone up so they could go to the city pool for their "swim check" for scout camp and camp Helaman. They all passed that, of course. Seth enjoyed playing on the playground while we waited and fortunately it was early enough that it wasn't excruciatingly hot yet. Seth came really close to getting hit by a car on our way back to our car--thank goodness Jared saw him and grabbed him in time! Scott is working again tonight but the rest of us don't have plans. It will be nice to relax for a change. I'm sore today--I guess from exercising yesterday.
In between everything else I watched a PBS version of "Far From the Madding Crowd" which is the book I just read for book club. I enjoyed the movie; it's nice to see a book you've read come to life. I liked the characters more after seeing the movie than I did after reading the book.
We'll be busy the next few days getting Scott and Tanner ready for Camp Helaman, which starts on Tuesday. They are going on a 50 mile canoe trip on the James River in Virginia. Should be a great experience for them, but I'm not looking forward to the packing part.
