Weekly Review June 29 '12

I didn't take any pictures this last week, but Jared took the one above of the sunset we had last Friday night.  It's blurry but you can see the pretty colors of the sky.  That evening Scott was working but the rest of us watched Cars 2.  Well, I didn't make it through the whole movie.  I have a hard time just sitting and watching a movie unless I am really interested in it.

Seth was invited to a birthday party on Saturday.  It was a pool party and since he doesn't really know how to swim yet I went along to help keep an eye on him.  I got him some water wings and he was really ok with those but I doubt he would have got into the water in the first place without me there to encourage him, so I'm glad I went.  He was able to go all over the pool and get more comfortable in the water, and he had a great time.  I enjoyed being in the water too and ended up playing with a lot of the kids since most of their moms weren't there or didn't wear swim sutis.  We had a pizza lunch and cake as well.

After Seth and I got home, Frank went to see Avengers--he didn't get to see it when the boys did because that was right after he had his appendix out.  He enjoyed the movie.  Scott was working that evening and part way through his shift called us to say that they needed him to work at one of the other stores in Frederick for the rest of his shift so we needed to pick him up there instead.  The other store that he went to is in downtown Frederick right next to a nice park and since Frank and I had been planning to go on a walk that evening anyway we decided to leave early to pick Scott up and just walk through the park until Scott got off work.  The park is called Carroll Creek Park; it's been built since we moved here and yes, it runs along either side of Carroll Creek.  There are brick walkways and several beautiful bridges as well as lots of little shops and restaurants.  It was a beautiful evening and the fireflies were starting to come out so we really enjoyed our walk.  There were lots of people walking or sitting on the benches along the way and we happened to see someone we know--the nurse from Jared & Seth's school.  She has been with their school since the very first year (10 years ago) but we just found out at the end of this school year that she is being reassigned to a different school in the fall and we are all pretty sad about it.  She is just a really kind, patient, personable person and I have really appreciated how much she has done to take care of my boys--particularly Tanner, who had a rough year back in 2nd grade and had frequent stomach aches.  I had been meaning to send her an email to thank her but I was glad I got to thank her in person instead.

Sunday was busy; the YW president was out of town so I had Ward Council before church and BYC after.  Ward Council is always really good, though.  I come out with a greater desire to serve.  Our home teachers came to see us after Jared and I got home from BYC.

Monday was a really busy day--I was helping Scott and Tanner get ready to leave for their 50 mile canoe trip.  We made two trips to Wal-Mart and spent way too much before we got everything we needed.  It was tricky to pack for this trip because we had to assume that the canoe might tip so everything had to be in ziplock bags or some other waterproof container.  We also went to the library and to the bank, bought groceries, and did laundry and other household chores so that day was very full and exhausting.  Oh, and Jared finished his 12th week of exercising for his Personal Fitness merit badge, just in time for scout camp.  (I'm really proud of myself for remembering to get him started on that way back in April!  And of him for sticking with it all these weeks.)  We were up fairly late finishing up with the packing--Frank had to help Tanner repack all of his stuff so that it would fit better.  We had Tanner's friend Taylor over that evening so that I could take him with my boys the next morning to the stake center which was the pick up point for the trip--Taylor is the YW president's son and since she was gone and her husband had to work there would not have been any way for Taylor to get to the stake center.

The boys had to be at the church at 7:15 so the morning started early.  We also had Jared's friend Joseph coming over at 6:30 am because his mom was one of the leaders for Girls' Camp.  Joseph can take care of himself, of course--he's 14--but his mom just preferred not to leave him alone all day which I can understand.  Joseph came over Wednesday morning also but he was only here until 1:00 that day.  On Tuesday I also exercised, did some housework, worked on my lesson for Sunday (I'm teaching combined YW this week) and gave Tanner's friend Ryan a ride to a class he's taking--his mom was also a leader at Girls' Camp.  The earlier part of this week was absolutely beautiful, with highs in the 80s and no humidity so that evening I took Seth to the park to play for a while.  (It was hotter yesterday but still not much humidity so it didn't feel too bad but today it's back in the 100s with high humidity and we have an excessive heat warning.)

Wednesday I continued to work on my lesson, had a long phone call with the YW president to update her on everything that's been going on while she's been gone, and did the weekly Wal-Mart trip. The deacons got together Wednesday evening to build a cardboard canoe that they will be taking to scout camp next week (they do this every year; it's for some kind of competition) so I took Jared over to the church and then did some more shopping--first back to Wal-Mart to get some things I forgot earlier (WAY too many trips to Wal-Mart this week!) and then to JoAnn's to get supplies so I can start working on a project--I'm going to make a t-shirt quilt for Jared.  I'm excited to start a new project and hope it's fun (and doesn't turn into a nightmare)!  I went to JoAnn's on Tuesday also looking for fabric to make some skirts but I wasn't successful.  On both trips I forgot that I was also going to look for some foam and heavy duty fabric for another project.  (My mind is going fast these days...)  The older two boys are going on a trek in about 3 weeks and they were each given a large laundry detergent bucket to pack their things in (that's all they are allowed to take).  It was suggested that the lid of the bucket could be padded so that the bucket can double as a seat to sit on, which I think is a good idea so I'm going to try to do that--if I can just remember to buy the supplies!

I got up early on Thursday also so I could exercise, vacuum, shower, and buy groceries before taking Seth to a playdate which was at 10:00.  The playdate was with his friend Tyler--he LOVES to go there so he had a great time.  I enjoyed visiting with Tyler's mom as well.  Seth was really tired later that day though and fell apart over every little thing that didn't go his way.  He seems to be better today thankfully!  Jared kept the launrdy going while I was gone which was very helpful.  We got back from Tyler's in the mid afternoon and finished up the laundry.  I did some online research for birthday gift ideas since Frank keeps asking me for a list.  It's hard to believe that my birthday is next week--not sure how that happened.  I really don't have a lot of things I want or need right now so I'm thinking about taking a class or something.  (But I did add a few things to my Amazon wish list; mostly cute salt & pepper shakers).  I watched the pilot of the original Star Trek series on Netflix that evening.  The special effects are pretty funny now, of course, but what I really found interesting was that there have obviously been advances in technology that they never dreamed about in 1966.  For example, when they were on the bridge, people kept walking up to the captain to hand him updates and information which were printed out on pieces of paper.  Of course that would never happen now--he'd be getting emails instead!  I don't think we fully realize how much technology has changed the way we operate and the way we go about doing things in our daily lives.

Today Jared did most of his packing for scout camp.  He can't finish packing until the older boys arrive home with the back packs which will hopefully be soon.  No one told us exactly what time they would be getting back so we are just waiting to hear from someone.  It's been quiet around here without them, which has been nice in some ways of course, but we will be happy to have them safely home.  One of my visiting teachers came to visit me this morning, I updated the budget, and gave Ryan a ride to work since his mom was just returning from Girls' camp and was still dropping girls off.  I felt kind of guilty that I couldn't go to Girls' Camp this year, but I guess I did do my part helping out the people who did!

That's all we have to tell about this week.  We hope Granny Cleveland and Grandpa Pew both have a very happy birthday tomorrow!
