Last week when I left off, I was going to a baby shower that evening. It was pretty fun. I always enjoy the chance to spend time talking with other women. :)
The weekend was all about General Conference, of course. Sam was with us for the whole weekend and Daniel was here on Sunday. The Elders serving in our ward also came over for the Saturday afternoon session and stayed to have dinner with us afterwards.
General Conference snacks! Chips & salsa con queso, fruit & caramel dip, cookies & pumpkin spice dip, dark chocolate, and caramels. The pumpkin dip is a new recipe I tried recently and it is really delicious.

On Saturday evening I went to my stake center to watch the women's meeting--they had a "munch & mingle" before hand. The whole conference was wonderful and uplifting. I love the feelings I have as I listen to conference. It all feels so RIGHT to me. It feels like we are getting closer to the return of the Savior. It's an exciting time to be alive and to be part of His work!
While I was at the women's meeting, Frank, Sam, and Seth went to one of Frank's clients to set up some cameras. It was a big job and they still weren't done when I got home (close to 10:00 pm) so I went over and picked up Seth so he could go to bed. Frank and Sam didn't get home until closer to midnight.
It was nice to have Daniel here on Sunday and to visit with him for a while. I did some Faith in God with Seth that morning. He is almost done with all the goals and we are working on learning the rest of the Articles of Faith too. Sam had Monday off work for Columbus day so he spent the night on Sunday but he headed back home Monday morning. Frank left early Monday morning also--he went for a short visit to NC to see his family. He had been talking about wanting to visit them since he doesn't have to be at work and his sister Dawn and her husband were visiting there this week too so he decided to go down for a few days. He and his sister went in together on an air B&B so it was pretty inexpensive. He got there safely on Monday afternoon.
Meanwhile, I got Seth to school and I had a very busy day. My friend Wanda needed some items from Walmart so I stopped by her place to get a list from her. I had to go to Walmart to get a few things for us anyway, but her list turned out to be quite long and I ended up taking over 2 hours to get her list, go to the store and back, and then take all of her things back to her. I also spent quite a bit of time that day doing some planning for a baby shower. (My companion and I are hosting a baby shower for one of the sisters we minister to.) That also ended up taking more time than I anticipated so Monday just flew by. While Frank was gone, I planned to make some things for dinners that Seth really likes but that I don't make anymore because they are pretty high in carbs. They required more preparation than a lot of the things I make so I spent more time cooking this week too. Since we always do brain balance right after school and I knew I wouldn't have time to do that and prepare dinner by a reasonable hour, I did most of the meal preparation in the afternoon before I went to pick up Seth so that the food could go in the oven when we got home and cook while we were doing brain balance. It worked out well, but that also contributed to my days being busier.
Tuesday was busy too, with all the regular chores plus I got the invitations for the baby shower sent out--which once again, took more time than I thought it would. I also updated the list of books we've read for book chat because I needed to send the list to a new member or our group. She is bringing the book for us to read next time we meet, so she needs to know what we have already read. (The group has been meeting since 1994, so that is a lot of books!!) I called Tanner that day because we were trying to get his FAFSA completed and he was running into problems logging in. We weren't able to get the problem solved while I was on the phone with him, but we did finally get it worked out on Wednesday evening. On Tuesday evening we had a RS meeting so I went to that. We each brought something from our kitchen (leftover meat, a can of something, etc) and they randomly put all the contributions into bags and then divided us up into groups and gave each group a bag and we had to make something with our ingredients. My group got 2 cans of tomatoes, a can of tuna, a few cloves of garlic, 2 small cartons of yogurt, a can of mandarin oranges, a can of coconut milk, and some peanuts. We sauteed the garlic in a little oil and then added the tomatoes and some spices (they had a few extra spices and other items like cooking oil that everyone could use). We garnished the tomato mixture with a little bit of tuna. Then we used the yogurt, oranges, coconut milk, and peanuts to make little parfaits. It all turned out tasting pretty good and all the other groups came up with some good stuff too. I was actually kind of impressed that all the groups made so many yummy things with what we had to work with. It was fun, too! We also had a short lesson on eating nutritiously on a budget. I had a pretty bad headache that day and almost didn't go to the meeting, but I'm glad that I did.
Frank had a nice time visiting with his parents and siblings on Monday and Tuesday. He thought about staying on Wednesday as well and coming home on Thursday, but since Hurricane Michael was supposed to be coming through the area on Thursday, he decided he'd better drive home on Wednesday. He left early in the morning and got home by about 2:30. It was nice to have him home again! The weather was clear on Wednesday and it rained all day on Thursday so I think he made a good choice to come home. There was much heavier rain and lots of flooding south of us, and he would have been driving through all of that. Anyway, I didn't have the religion class on Wednesday as usual because the teacher was out of town. I missed it, but it was kind of a blessing because I had so much to do. I had the usual chores plus a bunch of errands to run like putting gas in my car, taking things to Goodwill, returning library books, and a trip to Costco. I also needed to start looking for some items for the baby shower and I was able to do that too. We are doing a storybook theme for the shower and we want to make some decorations using pages from classic children's books so I went to a used book store hoping I could find some books for really cheap (since we are going to be tearing them up!) I did find a few; not as cheap as I'd hoped but still pretty inexpensive so I got those. That evening, after talking to Tanner and getting his FAFSA completed, I started on Jared's FAFSA and got most of it done. He needs to add his personal information and we both need to sign it. He tried to work on it yesterday but he had some of the same problems Tanner was having--the website kicks him back out after he logs in. I think it's probably a problem with the website. Hopefully he will be able to get his done soon too.
Thursday was a little less busy, which was nice. I had some time to have some "temple time", which means I learn more about the temple, do some indexing, and work on family history. Generally I just try to do something that will help me feel a bit of the spirit of the temple, since it is hard for me to go to the temple regularly right now. This time I did a little bit of indexing and then I decided to listen to the CD I have of Dad's funeral so that I could type up the talks and add them to Dad's page on family search. (The talks Erick and I gave, when put together, will be a life history of sorts.) I knew that would probably be difficult and take a long time and I was right, but I did manage to get Erick's talk typed up. I need to go back over it and make corrections so I haven't posted it on family search yet but I will do that eventually. I still have to do my talk too so it will be a while until I get that project done but I'm glad I got started on it. That evening I Skyped with Jared for a while and I also talked to Mom on the phone. It was nice to get caught up on their lives a little bit.
Today was really busy again but I got more done than I thought I would. Seth's class had a field trip and I volunteered to be a chaperone, so I was with Seth from 9:00 to 1:00. For the field trip we visited a place called the Earth Space Science Lab, which is here in Frederick. (We visited this place as a family last spring sometime.) It's about a mile and a half from Seth's school so we walked to it. When we got there, we watched a movie in their special dome room where they project the movie onto the ceiling. This movie was called Forces of Nature, and we learned about volcanoes, earthquakes, and tornadoes. It was pretty interesting. Then they gave each of the kids a clipboard with a bunch of questions on it and they went around to about 20 different exhibits and did the activities and answered the questions. There were lots of different interesting activities to do. When we were done, we walked back to the school but we stopped at a park on the way to eat lunch and the kids got to play for a little while. It was a fun outing, but I was tired by the time I got home. After the rain we had yesterday, the temperature dropped about 20 degrees so instead of being in the 80s and muggy it was in the 60s and dry. It was just slightly chilly but mostly it was really pleasant. It feels like fall all of the sudden!
(Seth on his field trip. The kids were getting instructions on what to do before they started going to all the different exhibits.)
When I got back home I decided that I'd better mow the lawn. I haven't had a chance to do that for a couple of weeks and it's supposed to start raining again tomorrow and rain for 3 or 4 days. It was nice that it wasn't very hot so actually being outside to mow was pretty enjoyable. Frank went to pick up Seth from school so that I could start working on the budget and fortunately there wasn't a lot to do this week so I got it done before dinner time. The missionaries stopped by in the afternoon and we ended up inviting them to come back for dinner because they didn't have a dinner appointment. Since Frank is the ward mission leader, he always has things to discuss with them too. After dinner I worked on this post for a while until I needed to leave to go to Pack Meeting. For Pack Meeting the boys got awards (two of my Bears earned their Bear badges, which makes me happy), they learned about Halloween safety, and they got some Halloween candy and some glow sticks. Then we turned out the lights in the gym and let the boys play glow stick tag for a while. They all seemed to have a really good time.
Now I am back home and I can't believe that somehow I managed to get everything on my list done for today! This morning when I was at the school I went in to the library to talk to the lady that is in charge of the library--I have volunteered at the library in the past, so we know each other. I have been considering signing up to be a substitute but I mostly just want to work at Seth's school so I asked her if I could do that. Her eyes lit up when she found out I was interested in subbing and she got my email address so she could send me all the instructions on how to apply, as well as the person to contact about wanting to work at Seth's school. She already sent me the information so I will be looking at that over the weekend. I have always felt like working in the school system would be a good alternative career path and since accounting jobs all seem to have requirements that I can't meet, I have been thinking I should look into this possibility. So we'll see how it goes.
That is all the news from these parts and it is almost bed time, so I will sign off for this week.
